Will an AI résumé tool make things up about me?
It can, if nothing stops it. A language model asked to make a résumé sound stronger will sometimes add a number, a skill or a title you never had, because it writes what sounds good rather than what happened. A tool worth trusting needs two things: rules that keep each rewrite to what you actually told it, and a way for you to see every change before you send the résumé.
How bettershell.ai handles it
- It writes from your profile. Everything on the page comes from what you entered. A rewrite can put it in the posting's words. It is not allowed to add a result, a number or an employer your profile doesn't support.
- Each rewrite is checked. Before a rewrite reaches your page, a separate check compares it with your original, looking for claims your profile doesn't support, such as a number you never gave. A rewrite that fails is dropped and your own wording stays.
- Skills need evidence. A skill from the posting joins your Skills section only when your bullets back it up. You can turn that off.
- Titles stay yours. Job titles are reworded only if you turn that setting on, and your level stays the same.
- Every change is shown. Each change is marked on the page with its reason, such as "Uses the posting's wording" beside the line of the posting it matched. You keep it or revert it.
- You have the last word. Click any line to rewrite it again, or type over it yourself.

What it can still get wrong
Rewording is a judgment call. A rewrite may describe your part in stronger words than you used, the way a good editor would. Only you know whether the stronger version is still true. That's why the changes are shown instead of hidden: read them before you download, and revert any that say more than you did.
A quick test for any AI résumé tool
Give it a bullet with no number in it and see whether one appears. Then check whether it tells you what it changed, or hands back a finished page and leaves you to compare.
